Why run Flats ?

I test drove an x6 last week (6 cyclinder) and liked it (current 06 x5 , 06 330, past 2002 x5) and was ready to order the v8 version but dealer said couldn't do as factory hadn't decided on packages yet ( noticed you can only build 6 version online). So I took a brochure to get an idea of what I might want when the packages do get published.

I noticed that no matter which model you get the rear has run flat tires but not the front. So this means you still have to have a spare. I was wondering if I have to carry a spare why have run flats at all? Anyone have any insight to BMW's thinking on this ?

As far as I know all tires are run flats. It would have no logic if only rear tires were run flats and front none, that is a 50% solution for a problem...and BMW dould certainly not do that.

That's why I posted the question, I have the brochure from dealer and asked them about it , they didn't know.

Your dealer is lying to you about the V8 because I have already ordered mine and even have production number that has been accepted in Spartansburg and I should receive the third week of July. They already know all packages and prices and it is already in their system. Only thing I can think of is that your dealer may not have been given any production numbers for the 50i yet.
