What's annoying about the HUD?

A lot of people have trouble focusing on the heads up display, which is very close to the driver, and maintain proper distance vision on the road ahead at the same time. I don't have that problem, because since I've played in a symphony orchestra for the past 40 years, I've been able to train my eyes to focus on the music 2 feet in front of me and the conductor on the podium, about 40 feet away. Also, if you wear bi-focal or progressive eyeglasses, this can present a problem with heads up.

I find it distracting. My eyes kept getting drawn to it. I imagine that I would get used to it, my test drive was relatively short but I didn't see a need for the option. You know me, I'm not one for bells and whistles. Do you remember how long it took me to stop hyperventilating over all the new gadgets in the E70.
![]() I guess it's like when SG drove my X and the spot mirrors on my side views made him crazy. You see something that feels like it shouldn't be there.

I ordered the heads up display in my X6 which is now in production because it was recommended by several other BMW owners. Once rented a Cadillac with heads up and it turned out to be pretty cool. Since I have become used to using a captive navigation system, I am hoping that the heads up will prevent me from having to divert my eyes away from the road. With the aggressive way people drive around the DC area, one cannot afford to look away from the traffic even for a second. |

Winter Tires
Hey all - finally got around to taking some pictures of our winter shoes. They've been on for a few weeks now, but as always getting around to snapping some pics took awhile
![]() Our biggest need was to have true snow tires as we have several trips this winter where snow removal is marginal at best, and no salting is allowed. So what we ended up getting are Vredestein Wintrac Extreme on 19x8.5 Beyern Multi. Its one of the combos our dealer (Motorwerks) is pushing. Installed with TPMS and tax it came to ~$3600. As you can see in the pictures they have already seen good use and they really have been very good in the snow. Handlingwise on dry roads there is a bit of a jelly effect when turning, but nothing too bad. On a side note - it is possible to fit the stock 20's in the back of the X6 with the seats down. Anyways - here is some pics - that last one is a bonus, because it was part of the same picture series

![]() Not sure if you can fit 20" in back with seats down. X5 takes only 3 20" wheels vertical. The fourth one you have to put on rear seats folded. Take a pic if they fit and let us know. |
