You can just buy and replace the button module, if that is a problem. But it won't get you the same feeling as the M wheel ;)

I paid 460 two months ago at a local bmw tuning shop for the wheel used.My local dealer have it for 850 with out tax.. I'm just gonna get rid of the x so that's why im selling the M wheel.I really like the feeling.

To help you with pricing this, note that I bought mine new from Crevier BMW for $325 plus shipping.

My new one M-sport was $300, but that fits post 2003 models only.
