If you're moving anywhere near San Francisco you'll want to keep the SUV...Tahoe is only 3 hours away, Reno is 2.5 hours away.

Also, you'll get more $$ for the vehicle in California...

Alot of your cosmetic mods are a detraction to potential buyers. Black wheels and black out trim is not everybody's cup of tea. An Imola Red X5 is already a tough enough sell by itself.

In order for you to get $43K, you'll need to get as many people as interested as possible. If it were me, I'd get the wheels blasted and p-coated silver, swap the grill back to titanium and peel off the black out tail light decals.

Sorry, but that's my opinion. Maybe there is somebody out there who likes the black out trim / Imola red combination. Good luck in your sale.

black wheels and lights are drawing away majority buyers.

Agree with after market mods are very personal taste and may detract from selling price rather than add. Either way, very hard if not downright impossible to get the cost of the mods back. I agree with asawadude's suggestions - will appeal to the broader markets.

I'm starting to see the problem with the mods that I've done. Thankfully everything I've done to the car can be taken off without any problem to the car. In general though, I'm just having a hard time trying to sell this car. The imola red with alcantara leather, although extremely rare, is not easy to sell when there's certain mods on it. Hearing all your opinions on stripping it back to the originals makes me think that's my next move. I think I might actually try selling it on ebay with a reserve price around $38,000 or so. Any ideas or opinions on that or what else I might try?

You have customized it to your liking so unless there is some other reason - don't like it, bored, gas/commute etc., I would say keep it.
I know you said that you don't need a SU(A)V 'cos you are moving to CA but I am sure that the most offroading that the vast majority of X5's see here is a gravel driveway.

If you still want to sell it try the usual cars.com, autotrader, craigslist, local paper. Have you tried autotrader - it will give you a good (lowball) market value to start from.

Well, I wasn't going to say it in my other post (to avoid hurting one's taste in color choices), but I agree that in order to sell it, you definitely need to bring it back to the factory look. The way it looks now, potential buyers will shy away thinking the X5 was driven hard (it looks racey) and, like others stated, black rims and blackouts are not everyone's cup of tea. Keep in mind buyers for this car are most likely 30+ in age and professionals; they may not want a car that reflects the younger generation. Let them black out the rims / lights if that's their taste.

Also, $38K is a much more reasonable price.
