I've been meaning to do this for some time now, you let's see if we have any takers on this. It's an original BMW part that I ordered and installed in my '07 E70 3.0i. Traded in the 3.0i for a '10 35d that came with the Sat option. Since the dealer wasn't going to give me any more in trade for the Sat radio, I removed and kept it. Worked just on removal. Easy to install, but will require some dealer coding. My dealer tried to charge me an hour for the coding, but I talked him to half an hour. Look around in the equipment bay for two (2) cables, one from the antenna, and another bigger one that has power and fiber optic signal connector. PM me if interested.

would this work on an 03 E53?

You'll have to see if you can find what's listed for the E53 in the ETK (electronics parts catalog). Because the electronics on the E70 are more sophisticated requiring everything to be programmed, I"ll probably guess this model Sat Radio won't work on the E53.

I used Tischer BMW in Silver Springs, MD. Keep in mind that this was a couple of years ago when I had the '07 X5 3.0i.

Also wanted mention that the dealer doesn't have to do a complete softeware reload, only an update for the new component. that's why it shouldn't take "3hours"!!!
