Trailer Hitch (union county, NJ).

Friday I believe I will be receiving a BMW X5 4.4i. I believe this is a standard no bells/whistles model. I got it for a pretty damned good price.

What I need is a trailer hitch w/harness for a reasonable price.

If you have one you're looking to get rid of, please PM me. I'm in Union County, NJ.

BMW has them in stock. Buy one from them for $500 and don't risk destroying your frame. Read the threads and you'll see the reasoning behind this. Frankly I think the advice from SIGNMARK is terrible.

Go Spend that MONEY!!!

Its put on the same way, its built the same way. Nothing is different. Its not a WALMART HITCH!!. Go look at them. The only differance is the name. Its a trailer hitch not life support. So go pay the big bucks so you will have a bmw stamp on it. But thats my opinion and everybody has one!!! So go broke or keep a pocket full of cash!!!

Wow! Not only did you put the wrong URL for the manufacturer, but you are frankly DEAD WRONG that they are the same thing except for a badge. This is horrible advice for people. Good luck with yours.

Really?

In that case, why is the Curt rated for 1000lbs less weight?

Why does the factory hitch include several reinforcements/components that are not included with the Curt?

Why does the Curt not include a module or other solution for telling the X5 that a trailer is attached (specifically - to disable rear PDC and make the DSC system aware that a trailer is attached)?

These aren't opinions, they're factual differences between the BMW and Curt units.

He can do whatever he wants, I could care less, and then when his frame gets messed up he'll have fun trying to get BMW to warranty it. I just have a problem with his advice to other people. The bottom line is that the Curt Hitch is not an approved hitch for an X5 by BMW standards. They DON'T look anything alike and the electrics are completely different as well. It continually amazes me when people try to save a few hundred bucks on a $75,000 car and risk their safety and long term reliability.

BTW, shaunatl great points! though you forgot to add, 'why does the BMW hitch require dealer coding (after the module is installed) to activate the anti-sway feature of the X5' and the curt hitch does not.

Weasel will become famous soon enough
The curt hitch may be similar to the OEM on some aspects, but is in NO WAY as good as the OEM. The curt hitch simply bolts to the ends of the subframe where the bumper shocks mount. (I know, I installed the curt hitch on mine) While the OEM hitch also replaces the bumper shocks with solid mounts and adds substantial internal bracing that bolts in from under, on top and from behind with the hitch. What this support does is extedt the load into the subframe and take the load off of the thin stamped metal flange that the bumper bolts to that can withstand impact, but not as much twisting as the trailed hitch causes under load.

I settled for the curt hitch to be able to tow my 1200lbs fully loaded 4x8 utility trailer simply because the OEM was not available at the time... and I fully planned on fabricating the internal braces myself before I ever allowed myself to tow anything bigger. But now that the OEM hitches are becoming available, I will more likely go that route and sell the curt hitch in the future. By the way, after you spend the extra $$$ on the proper (OEM) module and harness, the curt hitch costed just as much as the OEM kit in total. *checkmate *
