AARRGGHH...dried white polish on plastic
 

Hi guys.

For the first time, I used an orbital polisher (yes I am getting old) to give my car it's seasonal "once over" but found I was left with a number of black plastic areas with dried white polish residue. :tsk:

For the life of me I have been unable to clean it off. I have tried turps and metho over and over. The polish is Meguiars NXT.

Try peanut butter ;)

Seriously, the oils or somthing in peanut putter are the best thing for dissolving Auto Wax on plastic surfaces.

It's true - peanut butter works, but it is a little messy to work with. Use the creamy style, not the chunky style!

There are some alternatives.

Step 1: Buy some Meguiar Gold Class Trim Detailer or Mother's Back to Black, also a trim detailer. Apply with a soft toothbrush to get baked on wax removed from textured trim. The detailer should easily remove recent wax and restore the trim to a black sheen.

Optional Step 2: If the wax is baked on to the trim and resistant to the trim detailer in step 1, buy Mr. Clean Magic Eraser (hopefully it's sold down under). Use it with a spray bottle filled with water. Make sure you rub it on your trim and not your paint. You can find a description of the product here. Follow it up with the trim detailer for a shine.

One additional note: The pro detailers use 3M blue painters tape to mask off black trim before using the orbital buffer. It's a choice of spending time up front masking the fender flares, side protection strips, and front and rear valences or doing trim cleanup afterwards.

I went and bought some Meguiars Gold Class Trim Detailer and it worked beautifully. Not only did it remove the polish residue but it also gave the plastic a great shine.

I was going to try the Peanut Butter trick but my 8 year old looked too hungry for me to steal her lunch.

Dawn dishwashing liquid will work sometimes too. (and sometimes isopropyl alcohol)

Get a WHITE eraser from any store like staples or Office Depot (must be white, not pink). You will be amazed at how easily it removes try wax from plastic trim.

I cannot believe this. After getting taunted by my wife over the wax on the plastic, I will now be able to boast about my friends who taught me how to use Peanut Butter to fix it...great tip!!! Thanks!

Have not used it, but many folks seem to like this, and claim it cleans off the wax faster than other products.
