For people out there who have had my problem.

I'm a little iffy about trying it, I don't want it to ruin the finish on my wheels. (Not for my X5, but for my Jetta)

Don't do it! Use official BMW wheel cleaner instead. It's a basic (opposite of acidic) solution of sodium hydroxide that gently take off all brake dust. You can get it at your local BMW dealership for about $7,00.

what bout like meguiars wheel cleaner, the pink bottle, where u spray it on the wheel, wait like 2mins and then spray it off wit water. it takes off like 70% of the dirt, grime, and dust

I Just use Poorboy's Spray & Rinse and then use Poorboy's Wheel Sealant afterwards. There's still some brake dust but its not too hard to clean off.

I use.... a sponge, water, soap (Zaino) and elbow grease.... :)

DITTO!! ALWAYS....Same goes for the interior of the car too!!

I use a Zaino clay bar on the hard to remove stuff. Works like magic! I also used the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser Wheel and Tire, and it is an amazing and fast way to clean off a couple of weeks worth of brake dusk (it doesn't get rid of the hardened caked on stuff).

ATTENTION: BRAKE dust is the easy part...dish washing soap even works, but this thread was intended for the guys having problems with their rims getting stained ..its almost like a yellowish tarnish ...with little black dots..it may occur when u dont give ur wheels a good clean. TRUST me, u will know what i mean when u have it. I just had to USE the COMET though...i tried everything, it says not to use on painted surfaces, and our rims are painted but waxed...so i just re wax the wheel after it is spic and span. :thumbup:

Okay, where do I start... please discontinue using Comet on your rims or any other part of your X. No Comet product is safe on ceramics or glass surfaces because it is a mild bleach and contains abrasives that will scratch the surface of an object leaving a hazy appearance. Now if you think that the micro layer of wax on your wheels is shielding it from the sodium dichloro-s-triazinetrione dihydrate, talcum and other abrasives contained in the cleaner your are kidding yourself. Also, everytime you Comet your wheels the bleach serves to dry and harden your paint in a way that wax can not replenish.

Please search the forums as there are many better ways to remove these dirt globs. Poor Boys, Zaino, Meguiars and even BMW wheel cleaner work well. I am a fan of a clay bar (one specifically for your wheels, not to be used on your car afterward) or Wheel Wax. I have never not been able to get a wheel spotless using these two products, including Jettas, MBs, Volvos and of course Bimmers.

I am certainly on the obsessive end of the car cleaning scale (really Shaka, we couldn't tell), but I have seen MANY cars with painted wheels that were grey and chaulky looking. You have the flagship X and I want to make sure it looks the part ;) .

Off to clean my ride...

Good stuff! Thanks! Now what about keeping that brake dust off? After you do the comet and we'll dries, What's the best thing to put on the wheel to keep that dust from sticking to your wheel as much as possible anyway…?
