Wiring Color Change, courtesy of Navin in KC and josh

BMW must have changed the wiring scheme after 09/2002 because the hot wire on the newer models is now the green wire (not the brown wire) to the garage door opener. Note also that in an '04, there are 2 green wires running to the garage door openers. You want to tap the fatter of the 2 wires. The thin green wire only powers the light that illuminates the Homelink console when parking/headlights are on and does not have enough juice to power the remote display. Everything else is the same.

Did my '04 X5 last night (no nav, no dsp, with assist in case it matters), and installed my Passport 8500.

Tips to add to x5world:

1) The installation is exactly the same for the passport as it was for the
v1 as shown on that page, right down to the color of the clip that comes
with the install kit.

2) There is no longer a brown wire in the '04's, and frankly, I experimented
to get the right one. Sadly, I can't remember the exact color scheme, but
will try to crack it back open tonight to take a look and get that info for
you.

3) I only had to take out the overhead lights, and the garage door opener, I
didn't remove any of the rest of the overhead buttons to do the install.

Overall it went very quickly, and my favorite part is that unlike the
lighter, it's tied to the key so when the car is off, the detector goes off.
