Question Voice Recognition Question

I've got an '04 w/Assist so my original intent was to get a Motorola combo Bluetooth/Assist ULF. The second generation (i.e., after -993) combo ULF's apparently have integrated VR, so I would not have to buy a separate module.

However, I want VR for both phone and NAV. From what I've read, the Motorolla combo ULF's w/VR have VR for phone ONLY - no NAV commands.
  1. I can't find any info on the latest combo ULF - 84 10 6 963798. I'm wondering if anyone out there has one installed and if it supports NAV commands.
  2. If I install a ULF with integrated VR, can I still install a separate VR module so I can get the NAV commands? (I'm thinking probably not, but it doesn't hurt to ask).

You have two options

1) Stick with the assist TCU that has limited Voice recognition (Voice tags, number dialing) and purchase a BMW SES module. Get the car coded to turn off the assist Voice recognition and use the SES module voice regonition. SES module about $500. Coding ~$100

2) Nuke the assist/bluetooth module (TCU) and get a Bluetooth ULF module. You will get full bluetooth and full voice recognition with the female voice. Around $550 plus you can sell your assist TCU on ebay. No coding required

Ain't nuthin' that $ won't fix

So I can keep Assist and get full phone and NAV VR by getting the latest combo unit, disabling VR (which can be done when the car is recoded) and using the separate SES module.

That's tickling $2k in parts alone:
  • $1600 for the combo TCU (Yikes!)
  • $300-$500 for the SES module
Or I can get all that w/o Assist for $550.

So I need to decide if keeping Assist is worth the extra $1500 I'll be spending to do that.

That is what I understand. Assist is lame anyway. There is not a lot of value if you have a cellphone anyway in my opinion. Plus you have to pay a yearly fee for assist.

I bet you could sell your assist module with limited VR on ebay for the same price or more than a Bluetooth retrofit kit.
