telephone button

Ok, I am a newbie in the world of BMW. I love my X5 but have not learned how to communicate with all the buttons. If you know what I mean. My 2001 X5 has a telephone button. When I push it, nothing happens. In another X5 I test drove, the button would turn green and the display would say dial number. So, does this mean my telephone button is not active? If it is active, how do I use it? Is it to be used with my bluetooth capable phone? If so, do I need a connection of some type to go from my phone to the radio/telephone? I am very technically challenged so any input yall can give would be appreciated.
Thanks, From Texas
Rita

The 2001 X5 did not come with a phone system that is compatible with current cellular phone systems. There is a path to retrofit your vehicle with a Bluetooth system that gives full integration and a wide choice of compatible handsets. See http://www.xoutpost.com/articles/all-...01-bmw-x5.html for an idea of what is involved with this retrofit.
