"Activate phone" message after TCU retrofit

I have a 2000 e38 (UK spec) with the OEM Nokia 3110 wired handset. I have bought a GSM TCU to upgrade to bluetooth pairing with any mobile handset. (84106965055 - it's on the compatible list.)

The old phone module has a 54 pin connector, but the pins need re-configuring for the new TCU. I selected a TCU (vs ULF) so I wouldn't need a paring button to simplify the install.

There is no SES installed, but I don't want the voice activation. And no phone cradle.

I connected to the TEL module using scanner and I can communicate with it. I've changed the TEL VIN to match my car, checked for errors (none), can see there are no paired devices.

The old system had a compensator - this is currently disconnected - but do I need to wire this in?

I still need to connect the BT antenna, but I'm not sure which of the three connections to use. Although, it seems that the phone should connect without the antenna if in close approximately. Any advise on which colours need to be connected to which antenna - on the TCU I have cream, purple and black?

When I press the R/T button on the steering wheel (or the TEL button on the MID) then I get the "Activate Phone" message appearing in the MID display. I just can't get it to pair with my phone. Any tips on what to try next?
