Factory sub wiring question
The factory subs have two sets of wires coming from each. Can someone tell me why? I am guessing that I need to connect all the green wires and all the green and black striped wires so I end up with just two wire leads? Any advises is appreciated, thanks! |

I believe but don't quote me is because they are dual voice coil? I'm not a wiring expert -
I would like to replace the factory subs with 2 better ones of nicer material but haven't found anything yet that would work and I don't want to cut up wiring or get a new amp etc

Thanks RB,
I just read up about dual voice coils and it looks like if I connect all the green and all the green and black, it might make it 2ohm. Still not totally sure. I have done this with a e39 factory sub box however I don't recall the subs having two sets of wires each. It sounded really nice in the five series so I thought I would give it a shot in the X5. Just installed an Eonon 5166x and am already the new features. |

Its really about how they are connected to the car from the factory that lets you know what type of impedance the amp is seeing normally -
Like for example this would keep the factory impedance of 8ohm (substitute 6ohm for 8ohm) 2 DVC drivers with Voice Coils in Series / Parallel Connecting the two voice coils of each driver in series (+ to -) and the drivers themselves in parallel (+ to +, etc.) will result in the following impedances: Dual-6 Ohm Subwoofers: 6 Ohms Dual-4 Ohm Subwoofer: 4 Ohms Dual-2 Ohm Subwoofer: 2 Ohms Dual-1.5 Ohm Subwoofer: 1.5 Ohms

Just for experimentation get a decent multimeter, connect the wires on the sub terminals and see what the resistance is at the amp end. Make sure the wires are not connected from the amp or else you'll measure resistance from the amp as well as the subs.
