Audio to the Factory Amp w/o the Factory Head Unit

In an X5 w/o DSP or NAV, if i remove the factory head unit, would I still be able to get data to the factory amp?

Does the factory amp have any type of RCA connectors or would I have to splice into some of the wires somehow?

I would "prefer" to put the head unit on my ice>link connection, and then remove the head unit and have all audio come through the ice>link connector from now on, but i don't see that being possible at all....

It's not. THe ICelink depends on an external preamp and control unit.

You don't NEED to get "data" to a non-DSP amp. You only need to get it a remote-turn-on signal and an audio signal. Many installers use an adapter such as a Peripheral SVEN4 for this.

But out of curiousity, why would you want to pull the HU and keep everything else? The HU is the best part of the system...

Cute.

Im running a Non NAV and non DSP, which is not a problem pursay, but I need touchscreen in my life... I originally wanted to just remove the business CD and install the Xenarc 700IDT as a pullout 7" display, but I don't think there is enough room for that and the original head unit. I was planning on using the ice>link with the AUX connector for the ice>link as an input for my media, there by setting the radio (HU) to the AUX (or CD) input all the time. Now that I need to pull the HU out, im trying to figure out how I can use the AUX inputs from the ice>link without the HU installed or relocate the HU to a disclosed location (ie under my seat or in the glove compartment)... And all this depends on how to get the signal (1'a and 0's - data) to the factory amp without use of the HU...

Any suggestions?

I wasn't being cute. It IS the best part of the system.

I don't think your factory non-DSP amp takes data. I think it takes a binary 0V/12VDC(+) remote turn on signal and an analog, amplitude-dependent balanced preamp audio signal. No databus required.

The DSP amp, on the other hand, is a different ball of wax.

would i be able to add rca inputs to it besides splicing the wires?

I have heard rumours of an amp-output connecter, but I don't know where they come from or if they fit US-spec systems.

You don't even get to put RCA's on it. You need a single-ended to balanced converter like a Peripheral SVEN4.

You might want to check out bimmerforums - they have a lot of info on this.
