X5 Radio questions

A few questions on my radio, I have a 01 X5 3.0 with premium sound, dsp, no nav, and tape deck. The things i would like to accomplish. Remove the tape deck and put in a cd player (i have a changer but just hate the fact that any car company past 1995 would still put a tape deck in) and replace the headunit so that i can have the aux output for sirius or an ipod. Questions. Can someone point me in a direction to where i could purchase these things. Also i believe i need to converty from the round plugs to the flat ones? I guess i need to know where to get this converter? Also how difficult of a project this would be or if it were better if i just took it to the dealer with the parts and trie dto get them to install it? Also if i do upgrade the headunit will i be able to control the sirius or ipod via the steering wheel controls? Thanks for the help.

Andy,

For a non-Nav vehicle what you will need is the radio head unit and CD player that is from a 2003 or newer vehicle. For the most part the conversion harness from the round pin to the flat pin is plug-n-play. You'll need 3 components, I believe. One is the main harness block, one is a smaller block that talks to the CD changer, and the third is the antenna coverter (different connections there, too). If it were me I would go ahead and install the AUX input kit while I was in there, which is the 4th connection to the radio module, and the AUX kit comes with the connector you'll need for this.

As for where to source this, I would recommend you work with Vaheh at Crevier BMW. He is very patient and helps individuals like yourself collect the parts you'll need to get the job done right. You could always look for the radio and CD drive on eBay, but you need to have some assurances from the seller that BOTH are out of a 2003 or newer vehicle.

The Sirius can be controlled via steering wheel controls. The iPod can as well if you install the iPodYourBMW kit or the Dension Ice Link Plus kit. If you route the iPod via the AUX input then you can control the volume via steering wheel controls but not the song tracks.
