I was going to buy a CD changer since my X5 didn't have one, then I read about the Ipod in the BMW's. Since I already have an indash CD player, I thought this would be a great idea
Q: If you would to go out today to get an MP3 player in your 2002 X5, with no DSP, and no Nav, and no changer, what would be the best choices for Ipod (model?), connection (ice link or ?), and connection site (behind head unit or in the trunk?). There are all kinds of posts describing variations that I really got lost trying to figure out what my options are I need the experts suggestions here. Thx much

In my personal opinion, the Dension IceLink Plus is hands-down the best MP3 solution on the market today. Connections are made where the CD changer is normally mounted in the back, but you can put the iPod itself wherever you like.

1. Would either Ipods (Reg and mini) work with the Ice link+ ?
2. Where have you guys seen the lowest prices on these two items (Ipod & Ice Link)?
3. Does the icelink harness plug directly into the CD changer harness?
4. Would my in-dash CD player still work?

1. IceLink works with any 3G or 4G iPod or iPod Photo models
2. I got mine directly from Dension. Best Buy also has them, but doesn't carry all of the options you may need for your configuration

You are always there UCrewX5 for immed answers, WOW. OK one last Q because I'm truely trying to find what my options here. I hear Icelink/Ipod, AUX, new BMW CD that palys MP3, etc. How should one approach the selection if I don't have the pros or cones of each? Is it $$ cost? difficulty in installation? other criteria? Is there a post to walk you through the options to consider so I don't rush into one only to later regret it? or is it simpler than I thought? Remember this is all new to me, I never even paid attention to Ipods before, so bear with me. Thx

I can anwser this one:

BMW AUX kit: Offers a direct line-in connection for the iPod or other MP3 player. No charging, no steering wheel control or ID3 text. Cheapest of the bunch at about $35-$40.

MY2005+ Business CD w/ MP3 Capability: Plays MP3 CDs, but no ID3 Text. Can find for about $450 used or over $900 new (excluding core).

ice>Link Plus: Offers Factory-like integration for the iPod, emulating the CD Changer. Charges the ipod, offers steering wheel control and ID3 text on the screen. Cost - $199.

It really depends on what you are looking for, the ice>Link is definitely not the cheapest of the bunch, but will offer the most features and is probably one of the most-appreciated mods you can perform on your X5.

How often do iPods on this jack also connected to Cig adapter chargers have engine whine?

I've never heard an Icelink with engine noise. I sell them partly for the audio preamp and the elimination of ground loops.

The Cigarette Lighter in my opinion is usually what I've called a "dirty" power source. I would recommend using the BMW Auxiliary Power Adaptor, this will replace the glovebox flashlight for power and clean up the interior a little.

Thx TomG. I'm still pondering this as I don't own any MP3 players. So for the Ipod setup its going to run me $500. As for the 2005+ Biz CD, I'll probably never find one for a good deal if any! I don't know if my 02 CD/radio even has an AUX port but from what I'm reading around the forum that it doesn't. Are there other MP3 players that are compatible with the X5 and can be integrated as clean as the IPod set up? I definately still like to have the steering wheel controls and ID3 text. The search continues ....

If you want ID3 text on your stock HU, you don't have to search very far. Plus the portability of the iPod from home to vehicle is a luxury in itself.

Try not to think of the iPod as a walkman anymore, it's a digital library for music.
