8" subwoofer in X5/X3 good enough?
I am trying to find out if people with a 8" amp powered subwoofer box in the boot of their x5/X3 are satisfied with the bass boost/ reproduction. I currently have a 12" 1242D Alpine in a box and powered by an alpine PDX1600 Amp, which seems to be a bit of an overkill. So was thinking of downsizing the box cheers |

I am going to go out on a limb here and tell you that it is subjective based on each person's individual taste. That being said, i recommend against going from a 12 to an 8 because you will not be satisfied. I have a single 10 being powered by 400 rms and it seems perfect for me. I guarantee you will not get the same kind of bass from an 8 in the side pocket.

m5james, I did try the search but there does not seem to be a lot of 8" nor does the seach engine allow just a search for 8" on its own.
Bill, thanks. I was thinking maybe i should try either the 8" or 10" shallow mount subs which means a much smaller subwoofer box cooa99 |

Sorry, the link I posted using search was something where I had already typed in the keywords for you. Just search for "custom sub enclosure", you'll basically get to see everything.
A shallow mount isn't needed. After you do some reading on the various threads, it's up to you from there.

got an 8" sleath sub from BSW which pumps out plenty - their install also included a sub volume knob in the center tray

The BSW is not an option for me cos I am in the UK, Additionally is is quite expensive!. This is why i have no choice but to have a small box in the cargo area.
However if someone was to have/create dimensions for a woo flat pack that could fit into the sub compatment, that will be sweet

I've written it twice now cooa99....Do a search for "custom subwoofer enclosure" and you'll find about 3 different versions, two of which are duplicates of the BSW/Elemental Design boxes, then another that is it's own custom creative made by ZeroChief. If you have the stock sub enclosure, a handful of have modified it to accept an 8"-10" subwoofer w/o a problem.

Thanks m5, l did not realise u had updated the pics with measurements.
I am getting some conflicting info regarding how i should create a feed to a new Amp. If I assume that my BM54 (harman K) is amplified hence reason why I cant find an Amp in my X5. Which of the following options should I do on the 4 wires that feed the rear speakers :- 1) Cut the 4 wires and redirect to My Alpine Amp, meaning rear stock speakers will be dead, but at least I wont kill the radio Module over time 2) Strip section of wire down and patch in a LOC to feed my Alpine Amp. This will mean rear stock Speakers still working. Wont this end up killing the radio Module due to too much ohmage draw/imbalance (i just made that word up )? . The BSW /alpac's articles seem to suggest option2.cheers cooa99 Last edited by cooa99; 03-02-2010 at 01:48 PM. |
