X5 Ipad JL & FI Audio Project Build Up

Starting My build for the X5 which I plan to include an Ipad as headunit, JL 300/4 and JL 1000/1 for amps and Probably FI Subwoofer at this point. Gonna run the factory Mids and Highs for a Minute while I work all this out. Also plan to use the factory spare tire well as the subwoofer enclosure and will be relocating the air compressor for the self-leveling suspension to the area where the old factory subs were. Got the tear out pix and will keep some progress coming in the next few weeks. Last pic is just the ipad sitting in its new home. I will be fabricating the bezel so it looks fit for the car.

should have some similarities to this when finished. this was my bezel built for my 8" car pc touchscreen in my 325i.

sub'd This is great! Is your car dsp or non-dsp audio. I've been trying to figure out what all I want to do for an audio upgrade in my x5 as well. I assume you are running some sort of line driver eq combo. Would love more details on this setup as far as the audio side of it goes. The Ipad is awesome but a double din is going to be enough of a task for me haha.

it was dsp with navi. using a jl audio line driver with volume attenuation built in for my ipad to jl 300/4 (no processing or eq yet and works nicely so far). 300/4 is running the front factory mids only for the time being. theres a wiring diagram here in the forum somewhere for the speaker wires color code. i tapped all my speakers from the rear where they used to plug into the factory amp, added some wire and ran that straight to the amp. As far as sub and sub amp goes i will be simply coming off the line driver again to get my signal and then it will have its seperate bass knob up front for a little more control over the system when i dont want it over taking a song. plans are currently to do a single Fi BL 15 subwoofer in a ported enclosure firing up into a new custom floor. The floor i plan to rebuild by making a new one and putting the factory brackets back on it so i loose no space and no function from the factory layout.

oh and the sub amp (jl 1000/1) will go on the opposite side panel in the same fashion as the 300/4. most amps will fit this way once you remove the factory stuff. Its almost insane how much stuff i have pulled out of this thing. I got like two totes worth of parts plus a spare tire. hell the X mite get 18 miles to a gallon now lol

reps to you my friend! This is great info. Are there any adverse effects of removing the dsp items such as in the e90 where you have to retain the factory h/u for chimes and such? Sorry if that has been covered before I haven't had time to read a ton about it yet. Thanks for the info again though. Also just out of curiosity any reason you chose not to use the Rockford pbr300x4 simply for the much smaller size (1.53" x 4.25" x 6.75")? Certainly nothing against the Jl equipment.

Jl stuff is easy to sell back on ebay. As long I keep it in good condition i mite not even have anything in it when i go to sell it in the future considering i bought it used. Im certain it will still be worth at least 125 in a year from now. Plus it fits and is a solid amp IMO.

As far as chimes I havent lost anything. You may not be able to set and reset your info on the gauge cluster like miles per gallon, etc. but I havent messed with it yet. still tells the temp and stuff but im not gonna care really since the ipad can do everything it did, and do it better besides miles per gallon and maybe some other stuff i never look at. So far havent missed a thing except the volume and track selection on steering wheel.

Thats a good point, I do like the JL stuff they certainly make quality equipment. Good to know about the chimes, and honestly I could care less about the mpg deal, its not like anyone buys this for the fuel economy lol . Thanks again for the info and I look forward to seeing this project come together.
