You mean get the Nav HU but don't get the Nav DVD drive? I think that has some of the firmware required to operate the HU (I know with the wrong nav fw rev you can't get Sirius to work...)

Yes, the BMW video module has the "brains" to run the system independent of the nav computer/drive.
Not an easy retrofit, though, as doing so requires you to replace the wiring harness.
