King is on a distinguished road
The MkIV is actually made by VDO Siemens. They make the OEM version of the MkIV for BMW etc., and the aftermarket version for Audiovox and VDO Dayton. I talked to one of their technicians yesterday and he mentioned that the two units have the identical motherboard.

While the OEM unit is limited in functionality, the aftermarket systems rock. You can choose between 9 languages, 2D and 3D rendering, etc. They look identical from the outside as well.

The newer nav systems (such as the new 5 series) have the bird's eye view. Gotta figure out a way to make it work for the X5! It is also possible to add an aftermarket unit and view it on your factory nav screen...(just like watching DVD or Reverse cam) ...maybe that's what this guy has done??
