Problem changing date on bottom right hand side of NAVI

Well in the bottom right hand of my mkIII navi has the date. For those who are not sure what I'm talking about, it is displayed as follows:

--/--/2003

I am wondering if this is supposed to be today's date or not. So that is what it says and I want it to display 06/10/2006.

I was looking through the manual and followed what it said to do. I went to settings, clicked date, clicked set, and then saelected the date of today. But now after that it didn't want to change. Am I doing it right or what?

Is your time set? I know you have to set either the time or the date first before the other will take, but I don't remember which one.

Set the time first, then set the date
