Life after death (failed nav install)
So, my question is, once I get here, can I get back? if I make a new 27.1 cd, can I still install it, or does the system need a working version to allow an install or upgrade? |

No - as long as you have a 'good' update CD, then it WILL boot into the OS loader.
It seems what happens when you install the CD initially is that the NVRAM or EEPROM that the OS resides in gets flushed out. The Navicomp then reboots into bootloader mode where the only thing it will do is load a new OS. So if at this point the CD is bad, then you are left with a Navicomp with no OS (and probably a stuck upgrade CD). Burn a good quality CD slowly with something like Roxio or Alcohol and try again. You should find that the system will initially read the CD and then go into update mode & all will be fine. |

All better
For the record, Trapdoor is 100% correct. A new, and better 271 cd restored my system the next morning and all is again well in Nav land.

OMG I am having the same problem. I tried upgrading my MKIII to v27.1 from v18.2 and now all I get is a blank screen. Do I have to bring it back to the dealer? Which image did you use jdehnert and what speed did you burn it at and what kind of media did you use??

Not supposed to crash an MkIII but I've tried v26 and v27 on several MkIII and they all crash. You should load v22 or v23, that will take you to the most current software for the MkIII and shouldn't crash your drive.
Follow the instructions from trapdoor above to burn the CD and burn a data disk at the lowest possible speed.

I got it working again by reburning V22.1 on a Mitsui Gold CD-R. Used clone cd and burned at 1x. I just popped the CD-R in, waited like 2 mins. Pushed the right turning knob on the Navi, as if I were pretending the accept screen is there, and all of a sudden it came back to life and started loading the update. All is well now. Let me know if you have any questions.
