Guys,
First of all, this is a great website, all the information is posted is really valuable and I have learned a lot by reading them during the last couple of days. I purchased a used 2001 X5, it runs great and the navigation system works well as well. I am not really sure about the version of the OS loaded on it, and I am pretty sure that the system uses CD´s and NOT DVD (i didnt see any DVD logos under the CD slot). I would like to know if it´s possible to upgrade the OS version to the latest version posted (V.28). If yes, what are the benefits of having a newer Nav OS? and second, where can I find most updated MAP CD´s? I appreciate your help, I am a newbie and I am kind of lost.... THANKS!

The map cd that's in my '02 X5 is from Navteq. Their website offers map upgrade cd's. I don't know of any other sites for map upgrades but here is the link to navteq: http://navteq.com/updates/updates.html

You're welcome.
My OS is currently 3-1/63. I find it interesting that Navteq sells individual map cd's for $129 and the whole set for $199 while offering a standalone (possibly private labeled) GPS at Sam's for $349... Scott |

Thanks for all the info. I have read some additional material and I have a couple of question. I have an MKIII, CD. What is the latest OS upgrade version that I can aim for? Some the information posted here suggests that v.23 is the highest you can get if you have an MKIII. I found this link with different file version http://www.e38.org/nav/ . Now the million dollar question, what files do I need to burn from this list to succesfully update the OS of my 2001 X5?
thank you guys! |

For a MkIII the latest is 3-1/63. Any disk V22 or higher will take your nav drive to that revision level.
As for which files to burn, you'll need at least one and perhaps 2. If you are on V17 (3-1/30) or lower then you'll need the KeyCD in addition to one of the disks that is V22 or higher. Note that you don't just burn the download file to a CD. That is an image file that a program uses to make an exact replica of the original CD.
