If they are all new parts, the price difference is probably about right. If the parts are used, then the difference is high-- you can buy a used MKIV from eBay for under £300 in the UK.

If thats a price for a new mk4 then thats OK, but if its 2nd hand then too much, they are between £350 and £450 for a mk4 on ebay, you *can* get cheaper units on ebay, I paid only £235 (inc del) for mine and took a chance.

BTW there are a few more differences between the mk3 and mk4, its a lot quicker for a start, its more configurable, you can read modded map discs to include speed cameras etc...

There is nothing wrong with the mk3, but the mk4 is just better.

Hi ccfji

I have spoken to mr andy hunter of tvnavman ,seems totally genuine honest guy ,he will fit widescreen and mk3 @1850 2yr warrenty all brand factory install same spec. Or wide mk3 tv tuner @2k. Or wide and mk4 @2350 .He suggested i go for 1850 with mk3 and if i like the nav etc then buy a mk4 on ebay and swap sell the mk3 on and save pounds .he said id get a mk4 around 400 and could sell the mk3 at around 150 ,would you know what my 2004 would have came with if i had ordered nav then ?mk3 i guess and i suppose i would have been happy am i being weird ?wanting the latest spec in the mk4 ,My next concern is if i fit mk4 i guess my 2yr warrenty is void ? ,how hard to swap a 3 for a 4 .Is the tuner worth having ? and im i correct in thinking mk would play dvds ? next as you may see 9k miles in 30 months hardly drive the x5 . is it worth bothering ? please help me decide

Just be VERY careful that it is a genuine BMW Mk3 - there was a seller/fitter (no names but work it out...) who was selling on ebay and these were ex-Rover units which were locked and couldn't be upgraded - the reason they were 'cheap'!

The Mk4 will not play DVD's - it is a dedicated Nav drive/computer.

He is a genuine guy, was formerly a BMW employee at the Mini factory, and still does satnav installs for his local BMW dealer. He installed a Mk4 unit for me at his home in Birmingham. He was recommended on BMW car magazine forum in the UK having done a few installs for forum members which is how I discovered him.

Your 2004 car would have had a Mk4 from the factory. He also recommended I went for the Mk3 (maybe he has a stock of them?), but I went for the Mk4 and I suggest you do the same. The Mk4 is still supported with software upgrades. BMW gave up on upgrading the Mk3 firmware in autumn 2003.

You'll have to decide if it is worth bothering.

I know he does do Rover / Land Rover installations too. I have no idea if the Mk3s are original BMW equipment, but I am certain my Mk4 was brand new BMW equipment. I don't think that the Mk4 ever made it into a Rover so I don't think you should be concerned if you go that route.

It is interesting that he was plugging the Mk3 to both of us, although for me it was a £350 difference - a no brainer to go for the Mk4 in my opinion. I think you will get a straight answer from him if you are still interested in the Mk3 - my guess is that he has a huge stock of them since BMW stopped installing them. Nothing to lose by asking, although personally I would go for a Mk4.
