NAV issue - Please help!

I have a 2003 330ci with MKIV navigation unit with DVD. The screen has recently started flickering, basically a dark screen with some random flashes. After a while, the screen just works fine. Sometimes, it works perfectly fine when I start off and it will start flickering again and stop. Its just really random. Everytime it comes back on again, it seems like it just reset and the initial T 20.1 screen comes up. Has anyone had a similar problem? I currently don't have warranty on the car and wanted to ask around before I took it to the dealer.

Thanks in advance!

If it is showing the T 20.1 screen then you have the original "beta" release of the MkIV OS that the dealer was supposed to update. I recommend the first thing you try doing is updating to the lastest OS. However, what you are describing sounds more like a hardware issue. But it wouldn't hurt to give the OS update a shot first.

Join the club, there are a few of us with this problem but no one including BMW can say for sure. One idiot at the main dealer said it was the time of year.

Hi there, a while ago i repaired a 16:9 monitor and it hat the same flickering like you mentioned!
The problem whas the flatcable connector on the mainboard inside the housing.
I removed the connector and start to solder the pins again with verry thin wires!
With the first test it whas flickering sometimes (mostly when i whas driving on a bad road), i opened it up again and there whas a short circuit on 2 wires, after repairing the problem wires, the screen never flickered again!

Im not saying that this is also your problem but its just a little effort to check the flatcable!

Regards

Joël

What worries me is that if the flickering which results in resetting the system, happens during the upgrade, it could ruin the whole operating system. Any thoughts?

Hi,

If you drive with out a DVD or CD is the system then also restarting?

The solution is:

just put the V29.1 in the MK4 unit.

Do the upgrade.

Have you updated your OS?

Other suggestions: find someone near you with a similar setup and try swapping components (nav drive and screen unit) one at a time to identify the source of the issue.
