NAV/Radio/I-Drive failed yesterday for 2nd time...

This is the second time this happened and corrected itself and I'm hoping there isn't a third.
But here are the details:
Upon startup the accept screen comes on, I accepted and the main menu showing comm/NAV/ent/etc comes up.
On the bottom of the screen where you see the radio station - time - date ... all are dashes and it read on bottom left "Acquiring" and that was it. Frozen.

I tried the following a few times in no particular order:
truck off / start up / lock / unlock on the key /

up,up,down,down,b,a,start and nothing.

I drove home 20 miles or so and turned it off in the garage. While digging for the dealer number I decided to try once more and it starts and operated normally.

Anybody have this experience and know of a cause?

(fyi - 2007 BMW X5 4.8, 4200 miles)

your iDrive was resetting itself and there's not much you can do, but wait it out. my e92 did the same thing, and it was fine the next day. no problems since and its been a few months.

My Nav has done this 3 times. It comes back on after 30 to 40 minuted driving...if it feels like it. Now it says it can't read the disc and is totally shit canned.

You have a component on the MOST bus crashing the iDrive. This is very hard to diagnose and isolate. My Dad had similar symptoms on his 2005 E66. IT spent many days at the dealer trying all kinds of things. Eventually, they isolated that it was the telephone control unit. They replaced the TCU, and it has been fine ever since. What made the problem hard to solve, is that his phone worked perfectly fine otherwise.

In your case, it will probably take some patience with the dealer. They will have to do this thing where they hook the car up to their network and a senior engineer in BMW remotely looks at it. They process is pretty cool, but it is not easy for typical dealer technicians to figure out.

I'm not usi ng the phone. Would taking it out help? I use a Blackberry and never thought of integrating it into the car, nor do I know if yyou can.

The dealer deal sounds expensive.

It may not be the telephone control unit. That was just an example in my Dad's case. The root problem is likely that some component on the MOST bus is causing the entertainment system to crash. The dealer is your best option, because diagnosis is pretty tricky. I assume that if you have a 2007 X5 with only 4,200 miles that it is still under warranty.
