Nav Help for a UK Newbie Please

Had my X5 for 4 months now and loving it. Just upgraded my Nav OS to V27 - everything went ok. Now for my request for help. I have currently the BMW 2005 Nav CD in my system and I want to upgrade the Nav to allow UK postcode search and Traffic Avoidance. Looking through e-bay, I find all sorts of BMW Nav CDs and DVDs. Can anyone in the UK provide an idiots guide to what CD/DVD Disc I need to source? I have the Full Nav Pack with TV etc, and the car is an 04 X5 3.0 TDSport.

Does your Nav computer have a DVD logo on it? If so, you need the BMW Europe High version of the DVD (Do NOT buy the Professional or Business). If there is no DVD logo, then you can only use CD's

If you do have a Mk4 DVD navicomp, you should upgrade your Nav OS to V29.1.

In August, BMW Dealers had an offer on whereby you could trade in your old DVD or CD map disc and get a new latest 2007-2 version for £99 - the offer may still be on and it is a good price for a new sealed version.

Beware, some Ebay sellers will try and sell you a copy DVD - look very carefully at the small print and don't necessarily rely just on the photo! Be warned!

Thanks Trapdoor. Does the BMW CD allow postcode searches and provide traffic avoidance/re-routing? My Nav System is a DVD system Mk4. I was lead to understand that only a VDO DAYTON DVD/CD provided postcode and traffic avoidance.

The BMW High DVD's have 5 digit (NOT 7 digit) postcode search and TMC - as long as you have a BM54 tuner module, then you will get full-time TMC (Traffic Message Channel) - my X3 has only a single tuner so I only get TMC live updates when tuned to Classic/Real or on CD - which is annoying.

If you have a Mk4, then there is no benefit in running with a CD.

No, the 2007-1 CD has TMC, but no PCS (postcode search).

Only for the CD not the DVD. Navteq/seimons also do PCS and TMC enabled map discs. (CDs)

My Nav System is a DVD system Mk4.

Trapdoor is right, the BMW HIGH DVD has both TMC and PCS, you can also mod the disc to have speed cameras.

Upgrade to V.29, you can also mod the splash screen pointers and sky etc at the same time.

2007-2 is the lastest HIGH map disc, and it has both TMC and PSC (like trapdoor says its only a 5 digit search, 6 depending on postcode).

Ok,

• HIGH DVD's are for I-Bus (read older) Colour Screen Nav Systems, such as on the 3 series (E46), the 5 Series (E39), the older X5's, the X3's (E83), the Z4's etc.
• Professional DVD's are for MOST Bus vehicles (read new gen) such as the E90 (new 3 series) etc - with I-drive and I think the 1 series and probably the new 5 and X5
• Business DVD's are for the Monochrome in-radio type nav system where there is no map but voice instructions and arrows. These can be fitted in any of the vehicles that the HIGH type nav is fitted in but are easily spotted as there is no colour screen.

I think that covers it.

So, if you have an 'old' 5 series, with colour screen (4:3 or 16:9), with a Mk4 DVD based Nav computer (it MUST have the DVD logo on the front face otherwise it's a CD based Mk2/Mk3) then the HIGH dvd will be the one you need.

Some of the confusion lies in the fact that BMW called the Nav in the old i-bus vehicles 'BMW Professional Navigation System'. Confusing isn't it?
