What to do?

I have a 2000 X5 4.4 with the original navigation: 2-1/30. From looking around at this website I decided to try to upgrade the OS. I tried v26 at 4x - no go, at 1x - no go, and then v21 at 1x - also no go.

I do what the BMW notes say by turning the key on and launching Nav, hitting OK on the disclaimer. I eject the CD (the drive then sucks it right back in. I missed the 1st couple of times, now I grab it quickly). This causes a msg on the Nav display saying that the CD is gone. The 1st time I left this and went ahead and tried the OS CD. No change to the Nav display. The CD ejected in about 3 minutes, then got sucked back in (of course) so I let it go and it didn't eject again. So I ejected it at about 7 minutes. No change on the Nav display. I put the map CD back in and checked the version - still 2-1/30. I then found that Nav option was blacked out and inaccessable! So I tried again, but obviously w/o going into Nav first. It didn't eject on its own, so I did it after 7+ minutes. I checked the version, no change. I turned the key off and removed it, put it back in and turned the key on. Checked the version - no change. And no Nav option either. I figured I'd 'zombied' the nav. Then I went on an errand and the Nav worked just as it had prior to any of the above, but still at 2-1/30.

The above was all with the v26 at 4x CD. I went through the basic same scenarios again with the v26 @ 1x, then the v21 @ 1x. At no time did I ever get any indication on the Nav display that it was updating (as is indicated on the BMW notes), but I'm fortunately back to where I started and working OK again (at 2-1/30).

What's a poor guy gotta do to upgrade the OS? Should I not go into the Nav at the start? That didn't make a difference when I reloaded each of the CDs after the Nav option 'blacked out' and became unusable.

The OS disc is not being recognised as an OS disc.

Are you sure you burnt it correctly using a reliable program such as ImgBurn?

Remember: you don't put the ISO image file on the disc, the ISO is an image containing the contents of the disc.

Open the ISO file with ImgBurn
make sure it is recognised as Mode2/Form1
Then burn the CD
The CD will contain lots of directories and lots of files

Note that to upgrade veyond 3-1/30 you'll need the Key-CD, which you can find on this forum somewhere

I used CloneCD, as suggested on this forum. I burnt only the largest of the compacted files, which are over 200MB each. There wasn't much confusion there. The first file is a .mdf, as extracted from the RAR. The 2nd file I tried is a .img

I'm beginning to wonder if there is anything to be gained by simply updating the OS of a MK2 unit? There really aren't any update notes for those old versions on this forum, just the more recent ones.

Is it a major job and hassle to upgrade to a MK4?

There is a huge amount to be gained by going from 3-1/30 to 3-1/63. The graphis are totally different and much much better.

when you say you burnt the largest of the file, are you saying that you put the 200MB file on the disc? If so, that was wrong. You do not copy the MDF or IMG files to the CD!

The largeest of the two files contains the CD contents - it is like a zip file. It needs to be opened with eg ImgBurn and then burnt as a complete CD.

Changing to a Mk4 is super easy: unplug the Mk3, plug in the Mk4. That simple.
But upgrading the software is even easier :-)

Thank you for the responses. I've not seen any info on ImgBurn here until your response. I'll look into that.

I do not have a Mk3. I have a Mk2, with 2-1/30 code, which is what was installed in the original 2000 X5.

So I ask again, is there much to be gained by upgrading from 2-1/30? And is it difficult to upgrade to a Mk4 from a Mk2?

Last Mk2 version was 3-1/81, which should be lots better than what you have

However, a Mk3 will be hugely better, and a Mk4 lightening fast compared to the Mk2

If you have the money, bet a Mk4

Easy to connect - I've never had an old Mk2 so forget what is required but it is very simple

I looked closely at BimmerNav's instructions and settled on using the 211.ccd file I had downloaded and extracted. I used CloneCD to write it at 1x speed. When I loaded it into the nav system the screen went blank, then saidit was upgrading code, showed progress, then indicated when it was finished. I confirmed that its now at 2-1/81. WooHoo?

I just drove it about 50 miles and see absolutely no improvement! In fact, if anything, its not as good as originally in that it now requires me to ACCEPT whenever the ignition is started!

Seems like I've been wasting my time... I will be pursuing a newer map tho', as mine is original from 2000.
