hardwire garmin nuvi

so i recently picked up an x5...it had a satelite radio hardwired in for antenna and power....
i'm thinking...well have tired and cut the wires from the power and added a usb end to it...well...no luck, no power for the garmin.
i'm wondering if there is not enough power from the previous wire for the satelite radio to power the garmin?
i searched the forums, found an old thread from someone here, from 2 years ago...anyone of recent hardwire their garmin?
i figure i would take advantage of the mount that was installed too and mount my garmin on it...i just need to find a different power source? or use maybe a car adaptor end?

You need to regulate the vehicle's 12v supply down to the 5V that the USB needs. Failing to do so can damage the Garmin. The usual way is using the cigar lighter charger supplis with the Garmin.
