to upgrade the map, you buy a new version from the dealer.

Just like with a paper map... to upgrade you buy a new one...

what we are downloading is the updated version of the OS used by the Navi to render the maps in the screen and other cool stuff... for your map to be updated, you need a seperate CD/DVD that will have the updated streets...

Some people play with the operating system software, and download files to do that. You need computer knowledge.

The map is one single file - a massive database of streets etc - which for europe is something like a single 4GB file - and to update that you have to get a new map disc.

Some people add extra POI information, which can be done to some map discs in some countries (eg: cannot be done in my country) but adding streets and towns is simply not possible.

Actually, it's probably cheaper from a dealer at the moment as they are running a trade-in deal in the USA and Europe - bring your old map in and get the new one at half price (or something like that)
