Newbie Nav Help

Hey guys, I am new here, but I am a member over at M3fourm.net. I own a 2006 IB M3 and I am interested in updating the navigation software. On the setting screen it reads sw 4-1/60. I remember looking up what version this was but cant recall right now. I have been reading about upgrading the software, but still seem confused. I have the software downloaded to my computer and have used tugzip to open the files. The files that I see are V29.mdf and V29.mds. Now do I write these files to a cd using alcohol 120% on 1x-4x speed and then pop that cd into the car or am I missing something? If there are any good newbie links about nav can you direct me to those.

4-1/60 is v26. You should update to any v28/v29/v30 (they're basically the same for MKIV) to get perspective mode, as well as other minor bug fixes.

The mdf and mds are CD images. You should not burn the files into a CD, but use an application to read those images and burn what's inside.

In other words, the CD you burn must have a lot of folders and files inside after being burnt.

You just need to start alcohol120, then open the mds or mdf (can't remember which but the correct extension is shown in the filetype selection) then burn the cd. Use x1 speed like you said.
To upgrade just switch the ignition on, put the disk in and follow the instructions.
If it fails and you can't eject the disk, just leave the car switched off for about 25 mins, then unlock and hit the eject button quickly.

Do not burn at 1x. burn at the speed supported by your blank disc, then check the disc quality afterwards. For example my burner will create a bad disc at 1x, but a good clean disc at 16x.
