Diagnostic error with onboard monitor

I keep getting the following error with the onboard monitor on my 2001 E39:

I-Bus error at transmission

any ideas?

Means your Monitor is having trouble sending commands via IBus - most likely it is getting over-ridden by higher priority senders, although possibly it has lost the ability to send.

I've not noticed any new problems with the monitor.. is this common? any way to rectify this?
