Couple ? for MKIII to MK4

I just want to make sure I don't mess up anything before I do my swap next week. I have done some research, but just wanted some opinions and advice. I seem to have bad luck when it comes to these things. I don't want to fudge any steps.

1 - Some people say you don't have to, but should I disconnect the battery before the swap?

2 - After install, (and if I have to reconnect the battery) should I let the unit sit for a bit until I turn on the car?

3 - I have a Nav cd, is it better to have a dvd for its first run?

4 - After the swap, should I instantly load a Nav cd or DVD?

5 - If I need to upgrade the SW, should I wait a little until the computer and Nav fully link up, or just go for it?

I hope I don't sound repetative, I just want to be ultra careful. I really appreciate the help, and thanks in advance.

1 - It is not necessary, but to be totally safe, wait until the MKIII totally powers down, and the LED turns off. Then disconnect the battery. Do the swap, and then reconnect the battery. All that said, I have done several nav swaps without disconnecting the battery. The key is to make sure that the MKIII has fully shut itself off.

2 - Nope, you can turn on the car right away.

3 - Your nav CD is fine. No need to wait until you get the DVD. Of course, you get lots more function and information from a DVD, when you eventually get it.

4 - Sure, as soon as you do the swap, put in your map disk (CD or DVD) and you are immediately off and running.

5 - Just go for it. You can do the SW update right away.

I've just done this upgrade to MK IV and one of the main reasons was to get the 3D view but it is not automatically enabled. I found this info on another site that credited it to a member here on X5 world. Maybe it should be in the front page guides. It could be there already but I couldn't find it !!

Do this:

1) Push the "MENU" button to get to the the main menu.
2) Scroll to the "SETTINGS" (or "SET") menu selection and click the knob to select it.
3) Push and hold the "MENU" button for about 8 seconds to enter the GPS Service Menu.
4) Scroll beyond the bottom to a 2nd page, where you will get the Perspective option.
5) Click the knob on the Perspective option to enable it.
6) Once the Perspective feature has been enabled in the GPS Service Menu, you can switch it on by going to the "Map Positioning" menu (i.e. the popup menu where you select "Pointing North" or "Travel Direction") and selecting the new "Perspective" setting that now appears there.

Alternately you may wish to part with some hard earned cash and purchase this information on eBay

I agree with brian, "The key is to make sure that the MKIII has fully shut itself off." I have done the swap, (mk3 to mk4) I just waited for the red led to go ot then swapped over the units, I did not disconnect the battery, but thats just me.

My unit asked for a OS disc as soon as it powered on, (it was factroy fresh), so it might be an idea to get hold of an OS disc (v29 will be fine) while you do the swap.

If your unit just powers up, then you should be good to go, just put your map disc in and away you go.

Your map CD will work fine in the mk4, but like brian says the DVD holds more data.

If the unit is 2nd hand you may also need to calibrate the mk4 once it's installed, this is easy.

Find a motorway (freeway) and travel for around 15 minutes at a constant 50 mph, this will the re-calibrate the unit to your cars speed sensors.

Once your mk4 is up and running turn on 3d perspective (as above) and enjoy.

HTH

Merry Christmas.

Oh, BTW, it might be an idea to recode the mk4 once its installed, use Jochens navcoder to do this and it will setup the mk4 for vehicle VIN, colour etc.

I never got to say thank you for all of the help. I was on vacation, so I didn't check the website. Anyways, I did not need to disconnect the battery and things worked out fine.

Thansk again.

Welcome to the forum mate,

The latest for the MK4 is 2008-1 HIGH, and yes just eject the cd and insert the HIGH DVD.

Now that you have the MK4 you can have the uk speed cameras and other POI's on the display.
