Updating Nav software?

I have a few questions regarding updating my Nav software. I have SW 4 - 1/60. (Is this MK IV??)

I am thinking this is MK IV (I am a newbie here and new X5 owner) am I right? I am looking to get the 3D persective, (someone is selling a guide as to how to do it on ebay) as well as my maps.

My questions are:

1. Is the dealer the only one who can update the software? Does the dealer/stealer charge for this update? I have looked here, but there is no guide as to how to update it. (or I missed it which is very possible)

2. If I do update the software does that give me new maps, or just newer features? If so, what feature come with the update.

3. What is the current highest software upgrade that I can get. I have a service appointment for my 45k and want to have a list for them to do things.

Thanks for you help!

JB

Yes, you have a MKIV navigation computer. One key piece of information you did not provide is the year of your car and if it is still under any kind of warranty. If it is under warranty, you can probably pursuade the dealer to update your nav OS for no cost. Though, that depends a lot on your dealer. It really costs them nothing to do the update (6 minutes).

1. You can do the nav OS update yourself very easily. Don't buy anything from eBay-- that is a total ripoff. The first post in the following thread has a link where you can download the OS update image. Uncompress the image and burn it to a CD-R using something like ImgBurn. If you search this form (and read through this thread too), you will find several posts that talk about how to burn an OS update disk and how to do the update. Basically, you just put the disk in the nav computer and wait about 6 minutes. Then you are done. It will give you status on the screen.

2. The update does not give you new maps. It fixes some bugs and gives you new features in the nav system. I can not remember all the changes, but this thread might help some, particularly if you download and read a few of the TSB documents referenced. Some of the key features in later versions are Sirius support and 3-D perspective mode.

3. The current highest MKIV OS available is version 4-1/91. That is available on the V29.1 OS release CD or the V30 OS release CD.

If you have 4-1/70 or higher then you can have 3D perspectibe mode, to enable this, Perspective mode needs to be enabled in 2 places,

1: The hidden setup menu.
2: In the arrow map pointing menu and

Go to the menu screen select set (or settings) and hold menu button for 10 seconds, when the hidden menu appears scroll down untill the perspective mode option is selectable.

1: No, Yes (probably) and there are loads of guides, below is a simple guide.

Download the firmware from here and burn you own disc

http://www.xoutpost.com/navigation-sy...available.html

Once you have downloaded the file, unzip it (using winzip or similar) into a sub-dir on your pc.

Then use imgburn or similar (http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=download) to burn a new
(blank) cd with the new downloaded firmware image.

eg:
install imgburn.
then run.
open v29.mds (from sub-dir).
select "mode write" from menu.
press write (cd image at bottom).

Burn at 1x speed, on good quaility cd.

When its finished writing your new firmware cd,
Goto the car open the drivers door,
Goto the dvd nav computer wait for the red led on the drive to go out,
Then press eject on drive,
Eject the map disc,
Switch ign to pos 1, leave door open.
Insert firmware disc into drive, follow instruction on nav screen.
Wait (approx 6 mins) till sat nav asks to eject cd and reboot.
Eject cd,
Confirm reboot.

Do not swich off ignition or close the door when doing the upgrade.

2: Only newer features, only a new map disc will give you updated maps, check here for what new features they are.

3: V30 is the latest for the MK4 Nav computer, but this has no changes over v29, so i'd stick with that one (v29).

Hope this helps.

Hey all,

I just got off the phone with the dealer, and they are clueless about updating the nav software. Only thing they understand is that it's a new disc with new maps. For $220.00. I tried telling them, and the parts department about the software not the acutal disc. His quote "I've never heard about anything like that." They are clueless. So it looks like I am going to try this myself. Probably better in the end. Thanks again for your help! Wish me luck.

You could print and hand them this BMW Technical Service Bulletin document. And, then ask them to perform that update under warranty. (Just make sure they do the current update. This printout is for a prior version.)

Ok so I think I've done this. Last question. When I unzip the file into a sub directory, then use Imgburn to find the file it only shows me 1 file which is V29.mdf, I know there is another file there though V29.mds. The one I need to write to the disc should be the V29.mdf right? It's the biggest file. For some reason I can't select both files to burn to 1 Cd-R.

Please let me know, I think I did it right.

Thanks again!

The files are pair. One is a summary file, and the other is the data. ImgBurn actually uses both to burn the CD-R, but you only need to select one of them from ImgBurn's file open menu.
