MK4 v24 to v31 = Black Screen. SOLVED!

Must have been a media compatability problem. Used Sony CD-Rs and it worked perfectly! Yay!

Who would have guessed that Comp-USA media would cost me all this crap!?

Hey Guys! Just bought an E46 M3 and have already screwed it up, damn! haha. Because I am a wannabe techie I just HAD to try and upgrade my MK4 nav to the newest O/S and apparently I've screwed it up! I was at V24 (Stock) and tried the newest V31 w/ a customized splash. I followed all the instructions, but am not sure my system initiated the flash... I first tried burning V31 w/ Nero at 4x and...

I remember seeing it say something like "Reading / Loading Software CD", then the screen went black (power to it is on but no images) and then the red power light on the DVD unit went off. I was able to get the CD to eject after turning the car on / off. I then went and burned V31 w/ imgburn at 1x and tried it again. Nothing shows up on the nav screen and the DVD doesnt power light isn't on.

I'm thinking this could be the monochrome problem (which I'm going to try the fix you guys suggested) but:

Does it seem like my system even began the flash?

What would be the easiest way to reset the system? (Accessing the back of the unit doesn't seem that easy as it seems to be integrated pretty good)

What should I try next?

It never asked me to confirm a software upgrade or anything. Any help you could provide would be GREATLY appreciated!

UPDATE:
* I tried V29.1 but to no avail. Going to try burning on a DVD-R as this worked for someone in a different thread. I'm beginning to think that maybe the media I used before was of bad quality and so I'll try some higher quality ones later. I'd just love it if I could get the screen to show something again!

* I have now tried V29.1 and V24.1 with 2 different types of DVD-R. Still nothing coming up on the screen. Going to try CD-R later.

All the OS disks are CD I think. Never seen a DVD OS disk.

You can actually burn it to a DVD, i do that as i find that MK IV reads DVD better then CD, Have not had one failed update with DVD

Do you have to find a program to open the V31 before you transfer to a CD? I managed to download to the computer, can't open it, and when transfer like that to a CD, nothing.... Can someone give me a step by step? I don't know what is NERO, Alcohol 120%, ISO, etc which is refer to in all the post I see. This reminds me when I was learning to download pictures on line, it seem easy once I knew what I was doing

Google for imgburn or Alcohol 120% and download that program
Load iso file with the program and burn to a CD

about this topic, I have the same problem only on mk3, I saw on the screen LOADING SOFTWARE and then black screnn, and red light on CD went off. I was able to get the CD to eject, this same situation as you.

I have some questions:

1) What media type CD did you use when all go wrong? Comp-USA media ?
2) What media type CD did you use when you success ? SONY CD-R ?
3) What version software did you use to restore navigation? Can you show the place where I can download this version ? What speed and what program to burn CD did you use ? Did you make verification ?

I used Sony CD-R. I brought it back to normal with V24.1 software that I googled and found a link to. I burned at 1x to be safe.
