MKIV problem - no red LED light, no read

Hello,

I had some old version of OS in my MKIV 16:9 navigation (BMW E46 from 2003, so the version was something released around 2003).

So I've took V31 mode2-form1 image and also .NRG mode1 image. I've burned them using Nero about 4 times on Sony CD-R. They didn't seem to work and I had troubles ejecting them, but one of them eventually did, booted and some minutes later i just saw blank screen on Navi. So I turned the ignition off and back on, all I see now is old MS-DOS blue looking menu.

I figured out that this is some built-in old version safe mode of the navigation which activates if something goes wrong during the update.

So I've burned another 5 on new quality TDK CD-Rs, but using IMGBurn as many have suggested. I figured out they can't boot because the MKIV seems it's not virtually connected to navigation after the MSDOS failsafe "crash".

The red LED POWER diode on MKIV does not light up ever on MKIV. The head/laser/rotor keeps doing something like the CD is in, but nothing is inside. When I insert the CD, nothing happens, it's just reading it in continous loops.

So basically in short: used wrong CD, navigation went to MSDOS style safe mode, now MKIV reader seems it's not POWERED.

I've tried to disconnect negative terminal on the battery for 15 minutes, the settings for navigation were reset, but still no POWER in MKIV.

I have to say that exactly same thing happened to me in 530 with MKIII (went to safe mode after bad CD), but I could use a good CD then and it installed without problem, no Power LED issue.

Thank you for any help

To clarify, the Power LED on MKIV does not light up, but I can insert and eject the disk - it just seems it's not "connected" (some interruption after the failsafe crash) to Navi.

Sounds like the mk4 has crashed because there was an error in the firmware update disc. If I didn’t know better Id say that you have a mk3 as this is the classic symptoms of a wrong mode disc.

Did you get the image from here, if not get it now.

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=O8YINIDZ

Unzip and then burn at the slowest speed available for the disc (or x1 speed) check the disc for errors, the follow the update procedure.

When its finished writing your new firmware cd,
Goto the car open the drivers door,
Goto the nav computer and press eject on drive,
Eject the map disc,
Switch ign to pos 1, leave door open.
Insert firmware disc into drive, follow instruction on nav screen.
Wait (approx 6 mins) till sat nav asks to eject cd and reboot.
Eject cd,
Confirm reboot.

Thats it.

Do not swich off ignition or close the door when doing the upgrade.

P.S. Welcome to the forum.

Thank you for your help.

I was using that NRG V31 image and also burned it many times on 2 different CD-R brands. It just wasn't booting.

I've burned V29 on DVD-R for the last try and it worked finally.

Looks like i don't have a luck with V31 or my MKIV does not like CD-Rs.

It's working OK now in version 29. I'll get original BMW V32 on eBay.

Not worth damaging 800 USD unit for 30 USD software update...

Indeed, glad its working, V29 is vary stable, and the only real difference is the ability to read dual layer discs.

Sounds like the CD laser is a bit dodgy (faulty) you shouls be able to goto v31 using the DVD-r methord also, but it's up to you.

If you do get one from eBay make sure it's an OEM disc and not a clever copy, there are plenty of crap copies out there.
