How to Upgrade from MKIII to MKIV Nav and update Software (with Pictures)

As I said I have provided below an upgrade procedure that I used successfully for the following variants:

Australian 2004 X5 3.0d which had:
MKIII Nav with widescreen headunit and SW 3/1-60 showing on screen.

Relacing it with a MKIV unit that came from Australia and was attached to a widescreen unit as well. Both colour.

Only tool I needed was a thick rivet. Yes thats it!

I downloaded the V32 Nav software update and burnt to a CD using Nero at lowest speed (4x).

I've attached photos for your reference as well.

So here we go:

No keys in car.

I removed the MAP disc from the MK3 in the car. Took me two presses of the eject button. One to wake it up the other to eject it.

Waited for the red light to go out on drive.

Used two quite thick rivets on one side and pushed into the two holes in the front of the nav drive to loosen it and gave the unit a gentle pull and it slid right out.

Slide out enough to get access to the plugs at rear.

I had an amp that stopped the cable from allowing the unit to come right out . You may have a CD changer there doing the same. Pull out as far as you can but dont stress the cables too much.

Once you see the plugs push down on the raised notch before the black band around the plug. This black band is actually the lever by which you will lever out the plug and is used to lock them into place when you plug them back in.

Once you push down on that notch slide back the black lever over the top of it to pri out the plugs. I did the red one first then the blue.

When I pulled the blue one the car "woke up" and lights came on, fuel preheater came on etc. No big deal for me.

Pulled off the aerial cable and put away the MKIII Nav.

Grabbed the MKIV and and did the reverse of above and slid the Nav back into place. Again, when I put the blue plug in the back of the MKIV Nav unit the car woke up and the Nav came alive and blinked for about 1 minute.

I then put the keys in the car and turned to Pos 1.

The unit came up after about a minute and asked for a MAP CD.

Put in the MAP CD and it came up immediately.

As you can see from the pics it was showing SW 4-1/60.

I ran around for a while and took it for drive. At this level software there is no perspective mode to play with.

After a day of using it I upgraded the software to V32 using the steps below and pictures attached show the process too.

Again, keys out of car I removed the the MAP CD as before.

I inserted the V32 software CD I burnt.

I put the key in the car and turned to Pos 1.

Up came the sofwtare install screens and I followed the prompt and the progress bar came up. Took about 1 or 2 minutes to complete.

Went into the Set menu and held down the Menu button for about 5 seconds to get to the Service Menu showing.

Now I see the Perspective option in the menu on the next page and I selected that and turned it on.

All done!! Went very smoothly!

Thanks to you all for you help to give me the confidence to go out and buy and install this myself. Saved big $$$!

It might also be worth while noting for those that don't know like me when I went to do it, that the round aerial cable simply pulls off the back, it doesn't twist or unscrew off.

Also don't forget to get the dealer to code it to your car next time it is in there or use Navcoder.

I upgraded my MKIII to IV the day after you by the look of it, but in an M3.
