Reset by unplugging nav or disconnecting battery

Make sure you have latest software version - try a fresh loading of the OS (use NavCoder, "CodeDefaults" - this wipes the memory and forces a full new OS reload)

If that doesn't fix it then the gyro is faulty.

Replace the gyro (you need to get a new one from SiemensVDO, needs 2 x soldering irons, 2 x people and a hot air gun to replace. Alternatively, purchase a 2nd hand faulty Mk4 nav and use its gyro)

Model | Position | SiemensVDO Code No. | Description
MK3(__) | 7556 | 311232855100 | UNIT GYRO EWTS4M012 SELECTED
MK3(Z8) | 1004 | 311232854940 | GYRO ASSY 90DEG (ONLY 22SY591/23S)
MK4(__) | 7801 | 311230055840 | GYRO EWTS82NM21
MK4(Z8) | 7802 | 311233855730 | PWB ASSY GYRO VERTICAL

You need part 311230055840

Or replace the entire nav :-)

first KiwiJochen

thank you for your quick reply.

i've got v32 now and ill try to downgrade to v29.1 since the navigation often reboots but ONLY when navigating, not when driving ni map-mode. I think it may be something to do with Gyro. I will also do CodeDefaults in NavCoder today to see how to do it. I wanted also to check wiring and is there any way to do that?

MAybe to get out MKIV unit and try to re-insert all the cables? Do you know which specific cable is that?

Secondly, do you know where on the motherboard the EWTS82NM21 chip needs to be replaced and where it can be bought?

AND to be sure, the MKIV unit is the unit with the DVD reader back and nothing else(where gyro should be)?

PS: I've got this strange problem too

I've had in my car installed a Nokia handsfree-set one of the old ones. Now my navigation voice is not working bcoz i cannot hear it, MKIV shuts down the music but no voice allthought its enabled an its volume is high. I need to check which wires go where in that case too. I have allready started on dissasmebly the right glovebox and removed the Nokia unit.

Any idea how to double-check the voice cables too?

Wiring is not an issue. The gyro is an internal component inside the nav. Wiring faults cannot cause the gyro to fail.

The Gyro is a module, not a chip. It is a small shielded piezo-electric gyro module (little silver tin box) about 1.5cm square. It is the only item on the main board of that size, type and description. You cannot miss it.

You can purchase spares from SiemensVDO in Germany. Use the SiemensVDO part number I gave you.

Yes, the "DVD reader" is the entire nav computer. The gyro is mounted on the main board inside the Mk4 DVD nav computer.

The nav on most BMWs is located in the rear of the vehicle. The voice cabling goes from the nav to the radio module, via the video module

But this depends hugely on what model / year car you have. A Z4 is hugely different to a E38

Tell us car and year, whether you have old-gen or new-gen radio, and we can help more.

KiwiJochen

tnx 4 much info

I have E46 325Ci 2004 year model (productdate late December/2003)

the voice is not working in NAVI so i would need to check the wiring there.

ill try to order the gyro-part from siemens..do you have any idea about the pricing? (Since you know everything else )

Is there any other way to downgrade your Navi SW than NavCoder?

Putting a CD with older Firmware didnt do much

Hi,

A Dec 2003 E46 has a new-gen radio.

The voice cabling goes from the nav unit direct to the radio module (which is mounted underneath the nav unit.

The voice wires are:
yellow/red = NAV_NF+ = voice signal
yellow/brown = NAV_NF- = voice signal ground

The wires go from nav blue connector pin9 (NAV_NF+) and pin 18 (NAV_NF-) to the radio module pin 5 (NAV_NF+) and pin11 (NAV_NF-)
On the radio module the plug is the small 12p plug piggy-backed on the main plug.

I suggest you inspect the wiring to see if anything has been altered / unplugged. You will of course have to remove the side trim in the boot.

To downgrade the software in your Mk4, you simply insert an older OS disc.
Be aware that if you have loaded V32, the previous OS disc would be V30 or older (as V31 and V32 are the same for the Mk4).

The older OS will automatically load if it contains a different OS version to what is currently installed.
