Penske operates a BMW-sanctioned web catalog here, though you don't want to buy from them (at least not at those prices, which are US list). Tischer has an online catalog here which offers discounts. The final arbiter of what is and isn't a valid part is the live BMW ETK. Here is a 3-page snapshot from the live system as of this morning. Looks like the list price is $100 with a core charge of $500. Which is borne out by the description of the part in the BMWNA ordering system (not the ETK): "EXCHANGE DVD DRIVE ASSEMBLY". At the moment, the 65839232059 drive (non-exchange) is still available for $817.09. But if you look on page 3 of the PDF I linked above, that part has been superseded by the 65839237706 as of March 29, 2010 so inventory will not be replenished. |

I found this P/N at the ASAP site and it is listed as an ECE part for e46/65/66/83/53/85/86 cars (all rear mount separate nav computers of I-bus type except for the e65 but then it is a similar nav except for the MOST connections. The parts screen is supposed to be 65_1650. I could not find the screen though. The parts info page said the old P/N was 65 83 9 232 059 and was interchangeable with the 706 part. The Tischer price for the new is about $80 and the old abou 650. I don't understand this. The name is "Austausch DVD-Laufwerk" (exchange DVD-mechanism).

2) BMW no longer sells replacement drives, only rebuilds them. Thus, the old expensive drive w/ no core charge has been replaced by a much cheaper drive with a core charge. |

Terry, thanks for the info. I couldn't open the PDF though as my computer said the file was damaged. Does it have an SI number?

I've verified it on a number of computers and it opens fine. The only thing I can think of is that you have an older Acrobat version that doesn't understand files created with Acrobat 9. Anyone else having problems (or success) viewing it? |

I just fixed my MK4 sat nav unit via Didi's instructions below. It worked like a charm. Thanks for saving me $1100!
Background: My mk4 unit stopped reading the DVD map a few months ago. I thought it might be a software issue so I reflashed the unit with the latest SW firmware on CD(found the post off bimmerfest). It was at that moment that I realized that the optical head had pickups for two wavelengths (CD/DVD). The DVD was blown but the CD was working. This in turn gave me the idea to swap out the laser unit and hence follow Didi's instructions. Suggestion: I found it easier to slightly pry the shielding cover up while I heated up the solder joint. When the solder joint reached its melting point the cover popped up. This saved a lot of time trying to get the desoldering braid to absorb the solder, and it made it easier to reassemble (just reverse the process). Quote:

@snoopyone: your welcome.
I work in the electronic development. Therefore I could use all our equipment for desoldering. The soldering braid is mentioned for "everyone use".... Regards from Germany |
