Question Retrofitting NAV : Upgrade from CD to DVD on X5 2001

Hi All,

Is there anyone that have experience in upgrading the NAV system on a 2001 X5 from CD Based to DVD based nav ??

I Currently have the 16:9 screen option and CD based NAV (factory installed options), and think the upgrade may be as simple as removing the old CD-Device and inserting the new DVD-Device in its place, and the maybe a software update at the dealer.

Is there anybody with experience in this area that will share a thought ?
And what (euro) Part number is it I need - and are there other caveats or pointers ????

Regards,

It is a simple plug and play swap. Simply remove the MkIII (CD based) and install the MkIV (DVD based) in its place. No recoding required. The only caveat is to be sure the MkIV you get is for the color screen and not the mono nav system (although Navcoder can change this, if necessary)

Do a search on bimmerboard.com Nav form. I have posted all the MKIV P/Ns there. There are a lot of them.

I'm in the midst of this swap and I'm at a loss as to how to disconnect the two cables from the back of the MK3 Nav unit (blue and purple). There's so little slack on those cables that I can't even get a good look. I'm guessing something has to happen to the black plastic "clamp" piece ...

Pics and description on how they come off would be great! I've tried searching and haven't been able to find anything.

Thanks in advance!

1. Removed the 4 bolts holding the nav drive into the frame.

2. To remove the cables on the back of the nav unit you press the release tab on the top of the connector and swing the release bar 90 degrees. The cable should now be free.

Awesome, I now have swapped in the Mk4 and changed language from German to English (thanks to another thread on here, lol).

Thanks! Now I'll look back in my notes on how to get it onto perspective mode and pray to God that it has maps of my area on the DVD that came with it

I swear I read somewhere how to change from British to US measurement units (eg: it currently gives the smallest map increments in yards, I seem to remember US listing in feet?). Anyone remember how to change this or will I need to use Navcoder?

Thanks again (hopefully I'm not hijacking but only adding more detail to this thread ).

BTW ohmegastar, I got mine from a guy in Lithuania (on UK ebay). He had excellent feedback ratings so I went for it.
