is dealer coding after nav retrofit mandatory?

anyone performed a NAV retrofit and not have to take it to the dealer to code?

if coding is a must....how much does it run?

If I can share my story....

I have just done 16:9 & MKIV Retrofit on 03 4.4i X5 and it is giving the directions in "yards" instead of "feet" since the main parts are from Germany - more importantly the ETA is not working and after asking for help, it turns out that I need to code the car in order to get the ETA working.

I like that I do not get the "Accept" screen after startup but I guess I have to decide if I want to get the ETA and "Accept" screen or no ETA and no "Accept" screen....
