Did he went through the position acquiring procedure?
You need to do this if You change the location of navi unit a lot with power off. Unit saves its last position to flash as I know and If You move it over high distance it takes it quite long to find new location. 1) Let the car stand still with engine off, just with ignition in position 1 for 15 minutes. The unit will foccus its position and should be OK. 2) Or find in the navigation menu item, I guess "Position of the car", enter city, street and junction and press "Crossing the junction" menu item right on passing the preselected junction. The second method helped me with my Mk3 as I mentioned to have position-off when I already took off.

now he checked sercie menu and in tracking direction it is "reverse" and not "forward", every few minutes it changes to forward and it goes quickly back to reverse.

I had the same problem when I bought a used MKIII from the US
I am using it in Saudi Arabia ... after 2-3 days it learned the correct positions and stopped shifting ... I did not do anything, it just went fine after 3 days.
