Navigation INCREDIBLY SLOW!

My mother has an 02 4.6is, and she constantly complained that her Navi was slow..i just kept telling her its fine. i finally tried it for myself, the letters dont register quickly and it has alot of lag. we've checked it with the dealer who said they updated the software and its totally fine. It didnt help at all. what do u think the problem is?

Please report what software version is fitted - the SW version is shown on the top right hand corner of the main Settings screen, and will appear as numbers like "3-1/63" or "4-1/00"

Issues that can slow down a navigation computer:
1. Dirty or scratched navigation disc - dirty discs have more read errors, this slows down disc access time, and makes nav unresponsive. Remove disc and ensure it is clean and scratch-free.

2. Old or weak laser - creates same problem as in #1 above. SOlution is to replace laser or complete disc mechanism.

3. Mk3 nav - the Mk3 nav is simply not that fast.
If you have a Mk3 and want a speedier nav, consider exchanging it for a Mk4, which is much faster and more responsive.

I had the same problem. My navi was EXTREMELY slow and sometimes completely inoperable. What I did was I bought a CD/DVD lens cleaning set (this one) and ran it a few times in the navi computer. After that I haven't had any problems whatsoever (knock on wood).
I have MK4 with latest software installed.

Current version is 3-1/63, you should update.
Your current nav version conflicts with your dealer statement "we've checked it with the dealer who said they updated the software and its totally fine."

One of the bigs that will be fixed with the new version:
"The navigation system needs a long time to find the vehicle position"
This is quoted from the BMW Service Bulletin from October 2003, when 3-1/63 as released.

Which sounds like your bug :-)

Get any OS CD from V22 or newer, ensure it is in Mode2/Form1 format, insert it and follow the on-screen instructions.
