Screen has trouble flipping up on start up

Hey guys

I have an MKIV on an 04x3. The problem is, lately the screen has been acting up. When the car starts sometimes it flips halfway up and the lcd doesn't turn on, then I have to either use the buttons on the side to wrestle with it until it feels like going to the regular position. Then, when I turn the car off, the screen sometimes shuts only halfway. How to remedy? The computer and LCD seem fine, its the flip up and down mechanism that seems to have lost its mind. Cheap to fix I hope?

I've seen the same thing happen on a Z4, the solution was a new screen. Dynavin do a WinCE replacement for the X3 I think.

Bob, thanks so much for all your help so far (especially on the usaspec thread as well)

Is there anyway it might just be the rotary mechanism? The nav itself seems to work fine, and the screen has never flickered or anything like that.

There is every chance it's purely mechanical, however the parts are not available separately. I don't see why you couldn't take it apart and attempt to fix it if it is going in the bin anyways, although if you find stripped plastic gears, do you have the ability/facility to replace them?
