I need an Update - Please Help

Hi, I am pretty clueless to this stuff and would really appreciate any help I can get. BTW - thank God for this forum.
I live in Pennsylvania (US) and have a 2002 x5 if that matters at all. My nav system seems to be way outdated even compared to friends who have 2006 models. I've already spent $130 to buy one set of map updates 2 years ago and really don't want to again with the system I currently have.
When I go under Settings on the top right of the screen it reads:
SW 3-1/50.
Is there a certain version that I can only upgrade to with this system?

Can someone please help me upgrade. Do they do software updates at the dealership?

You can update your MKIII to 3-1/63 with OS Ver.22 or higher. You can also replace your MKIII with a DVD MKIV (plug and play) and update that to 4-1/100 with a Ver. 31 or 32. The MKIV can use either CD or DVD map discs.

Are you close to West Chester, PA?

The last version ever released for your Mk3 nav was 3-1/63, which compared to 3-1/50 is really a bug-fix version and you won't see any new features.

If you ask, yes, but they are not obliged to do it for free.

As Roy mentioned, you can upgrade to Mk4, and your nav will be hugely faster, and offer 3D view (perspective view), plus be able to read the latest DVD maps, which can fit the entire USA on one disc.

The overall look and feel will however be similar, as the Mk4 menu structure is the same as the later versions of the Mk3
