Homemade iBus adapter

I made the adapter as per the instructions in the navcoder zip. I am wondering if there is any real difference between this one and the one for sale. The one for sale has IC and a lot more components on it.
I have not used it yet, plan to install a DICE HD this weekend and will throw in the plug-in adapter I made for it then, just wondering if there is any downside or other issues to be concerned with using the homemade version?
Thanks all
Matt

No downside.

I use the homemade adapter all the time.

It doesn't have any fancy collision detection, but that doesn't matter as you only use it and connect it when you need to.

I wouldn't leave it connected permanently, because it doesn't have any low-power sleep mode, however it uses hardly any power anyway.

Thanks!
I made it so that I will have a DB9 connector hanging off the cars CD changer cabling, plug that into one end of the board I made, plug DB9/Serial into other end. Easily removed and reinstalled.
Had all the parts avail at work, and made it during some breaks, was fun getting back into component level work, so used to replacing boards and calling it a day...
Now to find a laptop to install navcoder on and get to tinkering!

Matt

I too use a home made adapter (from the navcoder zip file) it works perfectly and I've had no problems with it.

I made mine with a DB9 and the OEM cd changer plug, so no messing about, plug and play.

I'm also using the above "home made" adapter, been sitting permanently in the car for about 2 years connecting my carPC with the I-bus, never have had any issues...

That sounds to be a good option. I did not know about the homemade device. Is this device going to fully and safely replace the resler interface or not?
But I still have a problem. The device is designed to operate with a serial port but I onlyhave a USB port. How can I fix this? (I was thinking to use the data in/out USB).
Thanks a lot

vince, I am going to be trying a USB to serial adapter to see if that will work or not. I have machines with serial as well, but since most of those netbook things have USB and thats an eventual plan to have in car at all times, figure I will try it now...
Hopefully get some time to play this weekend. I will report findings either way.
I have a few Serial to USB adapters at work to try, will probably try them all..
