Mk4 Nav - how easy to screw up?
Tried to udgrade to V.31/32 as discussed in the sticky thread, downloaded RAR file and unzipped into the image file, used Nero to burn a copy onto CD (set to mode 2 etc as instructions in sticky thread) checked disc and had the 13 folders/41 files etc. Went to car, opened drivers door and boot, waited to red light light to stop flashing then had to press eject 3 times to get MAP disc out, turned key position 1 then inserted Update CD, NAV screen goes blank, then just stays blank, leave for 15 mins but nothing, have now noticed that the red power light on NAV unit is no longer on and disc is just spinning for 10seconds then briefly stopping then spinning upagain for 10 seconds like its trying to find something but cant, this just continues until it finally lets you eject the disc! NAV screen is now blue with everything working as normal except no navigation command. I have tried disconnecting both battery and navigation unit but no luck! I have also tried burning off an unmoddified Version 27 but the unit just does as before, disc goes in, no red power light and disc just spins for 10 seconds, stops breifly then spins for 10 seconds etc etc. So just how easy are these units to fry? Cheers guys! Stew |

Hi Stew, welcome to the forums.
The MK4 is a very robust unit and should come back to life with a good OS disc image. Are you sure you have a mk4? what speed to you burn the cd at? Do not use nero for burning the OS, its shite, use imgburn (its free).

Yep definatly MK4, has DVD logo to front.
Disc was written at speed 1x . Having looked at other posts and seeing the lack of power light i think the unit is dead!? |

An OS update should not have killed it mate.
Pm me your address and I'll pop a OS disc in the post, it's worth a shot.

A quick update for anybody whose interested - ccfj1 sent me a a GOOD V.32 OS disc, did the install as usual (loaded the disc even though i had no power light at all) and hey presto, 3 mins later i have fully working Sat Nav again!
To anybody having the same problems as me id suggest checking the disc youve burnt off, i thought i had mine perfect but obviously not!!! Big thanks to ccfj1! Stew |

Hi guys. I've only recently come across the site and have a similar problem with my nav unit. The unit simply stopped working and no red power light. The eject button flashes, but CD/DVD is not spinning and I cannot eject the CD! Took the car into he dealer, they recommended a new unit at CRAZY prices! I saw on another site that the rom inside can become corrupted, or something. Is there an easier way to get the thing to work again? BTW, I'm in South Africa.

What unit do you have a mk3 or mk4 ?
The first thing you need to do is eject the cd. option 1, press and hold the eject button until it pops out. option 2, press the eject button as fast as you can repeatedly until it pops out. option 3, take the drive out and remove the lid and manually eject the cd. Replace back in car and plug in. Make a OEM v32 OS disc, make it a mode2/form1 that way it works in both the mk3 and the mk4. Insert into drive and pray, it will either work or not. If it's bust, get one from ebay, it's a bit cheaper. HTH
