DVD Nav not reading DVD anymore - CD's are working?!?!?

2004 X5 3.0D
DVD Nav.

Player won't read DVD's anymore. No problem reading CD's.

I read somewhere that DVD and CD need different lasers to read them, so a DVD player has 2 lasers inside.

If so, it looks as if my DVD laser has gone walkabout and a new module will be necessary ..... ouch!!!

Anyone know if this is the case or if there are any other less expensive possibilities?

The Nav unit does not have two lasers. It only has one for reading DVDs and CDs. If your unit no longer reads DVDs it seams that the laser unit is defect. To change the laser unit I wrote a DIY here.

Souces for the laser unit are here:

Wow, that is so cool. Thanks so much I will get stuck in next week.

edit: The lasers are about 80 Euro including postage here now, unless I order from HK or USA, but then I have problems bringing electronics from outside EU - customs bummer.

I found the entire drive unit at Grandata.co.uk for 102 quid including shipping, so that's not much more now the pound is in the toilet.

I've put in an order, will arrive next week hopefully.

thanks again.

PS. Got any info on my other threads re: backup cam with nav and radio power button not working?

Thanks Roger. For less than $25 I can't go wrong so I ordered it. If anyone else thinks it wouldn't work I'd appreciate the response.

Oh, my bad. Sorry, I did say I wasn't the expert.

Update on my situation, the drive arrived this morning, I fitted it and presto, my nav now reads DVD's, including the latest east european with speed cams I got of bittorrent - weyhey

Now, if only my AV amp wasn't blown, I'd be able to hear the nice lady talking

Thanks so much for all your help Didi (and the others)
