MKIII Nav and radio wont work (Blank screen)

I recently got a 2001 BMW X5 3.0 my dad handed down to me. The only problem is the Nav and the radio don't work. The screen is blank and flickers. I know there use to be a sound system in the car that was taking out, and the alternator and battery was replaced. I'm not sure if that has anything to do with it but i checked the wires on back of the nav drive and all the wires are connected and I checked the radio and nav fuses and they are still good. I really don't know what else could be the problem and I'm trying to stay away from taking it to the dealer if possible. Any help or advise as what could be causing this?

Thanks

Navi worked before or no? Looks like navi soft is corrupted after not correct soft update...
1. Download the navi soft (v22 o higher) which is created in Mode2 (this is very important) and burn it on the lowest speed (1x-2x), as well dowload and burn KeyCD (all links you can find on this forum)
2. Swith off the ignition, disconnect navi device (from the behind) for 15-20 min, connect again.
3. Insert the disk from step 1 into navi and wait for starting the upgrade process (it could take several minutes till this process comes, be patient)
4. After finishing the update process if your navi will ask to insert KeyCD, insert it
Lood luck, hope this will help you....

Regarding the sound - check the radiomodule ,looks like it dead... Does the red led on the boardmonitor is flashing?

The navi and radio screen did work before I had the alternator and battery changed. I was told that the radio did work also but it was asking for a code. Now the screen is just blank and flickers every few seconds. I'll try doing the update and see if anything comes on the screen. Let you know how it goes. Thanks for the advise.

Read this... it will explain your problem. You have a 99% liklihood that your MKIII navigation computer fried when the battery was disconnected.

afaik mk3 have a soft spot when is about power loss (also with discs written in mode1...), in the best case, will work after navi sw load, you can also force mk3 to ask for navi sw with navcoder, inpa or dis...anyway, just for the future, DO NOT disconnect battery(or mk3 cables) before mk3's led is off (standby mode)

I tired updating the software but the screen is still blank. When I put the disk in I notice the screen stopped flickering but was still left blank. When the cd ejected the screen started flickering every few seconds again. Reading that trouble shooting post it looks like that is the problem I have the navigation computer being fried which sucks. Any reason why the screen would stop flickering when the disk is put in but start again when ejected? Either way screen just stay blank. Is it just the MKIII that has this problem and if my computer is fried ,if so should I replace with MKIV?

A couple questions, if I was to buy a used land rover version mk3 would it just be plug and play? Would I have to input a code or anything to get it to work with the x5 and radio. I read somewhere you might need a code from the dealer and your vin number but what if the MK3 is from a different car or better yet a land rover, would i need the vin the mk3 came from? Also would the cd map from the bmw work in land rover mk3 or would I need there version. I was considering replacing with mk4 but its just too expensive right now.

I would not recommend using the mk3 unit from the rover, it has a locked OS, so will accept no updates, go for another mk3 or a mk4.

The problem is that the guys who did the battery/alternator change did not follow the power down procedure for the mk3, they have corrupted the drives ROM.

I read at least one of these every other week, people who don't know what they are doing working on these cars...
