North America Maps ~ 2009/2010 High Updates

Don't know why we are stuck on a 2008/09 version.
I mailed Navteq, and they tell me they are waiting for BMW.
Aren't they the ones that make the maps ??

Thank you for contacting NAVTEQ.
So far we have not heard any word from BMW as to
when their next updates are going to be released.

Newer BMW's are now using hard drive based Nav maps (CIC system) which are made by a different company (Tele Atlas) and not Navteq. In some models this change took place as long ago as September 2008. For the X5 it happened in October 2009. Thus I would presume they (BMW & Navteq) are slowly phasing out those updates (i.e. they used to be released once or even twice a year, and now it's less then once a year). Given that NavTeq has had 2010 disks available for different cars (Audi, Jaguar, etc.) and only has up to 2008.1 for BMW CD based systems, and 2009.1 for BMW High & Professional systems (which were released October 1, 2008), I'm starting to get the feeling that it's the end of the road. I hope I'm wrong, but again, since they no longer have the contract for updates from BMW/Mini, why would they bother to make them?

It is worth noting that NavTeq has a 2009-2010 update for Europe for the X5 e53 system, but only lists CD's and not DVD's. However, what is even more interesting is that Tele Atlas also sells updates for the older X5 e53 system for Europe only and they have a 2009-2010 update as well.

Online Shop - Tele Atlas

Even the older Nav operating system is no longer being updated and ver 32 which came out in June 2008 seems to be the end of the line.

In the case of the CIC system, they have already had 2 updates for 2009 and one for 2010.

Yes. But BMW provides them an updated list of BMW-specific information (as an example, one of the POI's you can search for is "BMW CENTER".

Additionally, each car manufacturer that uses the NAVTEQ maps gets a whole list of things that they can include / exclude from the maps.

I would think that there's enough of a market for updates that NAVTEQ would push to get the map released. After all, they get $200 from each customer for each update. They used to have 2 DVD updates a year, then they went to one a year and now it looks like they are on a cycle longer than a year (the "current" map is 2009.1 from October, 2008).

The Mk4 Nav, at v4-1/100, is stable and appears bug free

It is no longer fitted in any current production BMWs. The last BMWs with the Mk4 - the Z4 and X3 - have changed to MOST systems.

So at some stage BMW have to end the development life cycle of the product (in the same way that BMW no longer do development on the E34 or E36...)

Every product has to come to an end, and it looks like 4-1/100 will be the last OS for the Mk4 (just like 3-1/63 was the last for the Mk3)

I concur, I've had it from different sources (BMW UK and BMW AG), that 4-1/100 is the last for the mk4
